Again with the Death Guard but also more Tyranids

This week I finished the Nurgle Chaos Space Marine Sorcerer from last week's post. And, after I finished reading the new Tyranids Codex, I again picked up the brush to get some more bug on the table, but see for yourself.

Other than the aforementioned Sorcerer, there are pictures of the Chaos Lord and the Malignant Plaguecaster. The former is there because I finally managed to finish his basing the latter, since I noticed that up until now I only had shown him in the group-picture of the finished Death Guard from the Dark Imperium Box, but not on his own. He was finishedd right before I took the group shot, but somehow I forgot to take singles of him.
With that I managed to paint up all of the Death Guard again, but I'm tempted to buy some more Poxwalkers and more Plagemarines - we'll see what I'll get myself for christmas.

Tyranid Warriors 2nd edition
Pict 308: Tyranid Warriors 2nd edition
With the new Tyranid Codex I looked at all the Tyranids that lay unpainted in a box and discovered these fun little Shrike conversions. I was sad to see, that they are not only no longer in ther Codex, but that the loadout I build them with (all close combat weapons) is not even legal when playing with the Index. I didn't bother to change them since I'm playing so little 40k these days and I do hope my opponent wont take offence to how they are built since we mostly play open or narrative scenarios. Other than that there are two second edition plastic Warriors. I painted one up in 2015 and now I feel like painting the rest of the brood.
Right now I only drybrushed the skin areas. The next step - doing the carapace - always takes the longest but I hope to power through so that I can finish them all before christmas.

A little Nurgle here and there

This week I pretty much didn't have any time to paint but I managed to get a litte work done with my Death Guard.
Plague Marine Icon Bearer
Pict 301: Plaguemarine Icon Bearer
First is this updated Plagemarine. - I added the banner of a Nurgle Sorcerer by ForgeWorld to his back to make him the Icon Bearer of the squad, since every squad should have one.

The only other miniature I can show is said Nurgle Sorcerer. He's not wuite done yet - Im not quite sure wether I'll keep the face like it is now or if I shoud mess about with it some more. Other than that the base is obviously missing - I still haven't gotten around to buy some more Agrellan Badland...

Edward Scissorhands for the Death Guard

This week the Real Life took over so that there is not too much progress. I only managed to finish painting one lonely miniature I baptised Edward Scissorhands!

Death Guard Chaos Lord
Pict 267: Death Guard Chaos Lord
Death Guard Chaos Lord
Pict 268: Death Guard Chaos Lord
This miniature is originally one of the Chaos Chosen from the Dark Vengece box. I really liked it when it was released and got it as th only one of the Chaos part of the box. This week I decided to repaint it for my new Death Guard army. I delibered how to use it with the Codex and only found two ways: Either use it as a proxy Possed Marine or a Chaos Lord. I finally decided to go with the Chaos Lord because the miniature has an appropriate amount of detail and I don't own any other Posessed so that a single one wouldn't be that usefull.
Only thing missing is the basing - I ran out of Agrellan Badland when I finished the Plague Marines. I wanted to show the Lord nevertheless but I'll have to swing by my FLGS and pick up some paints.

Pict 269: Nymphe (WIP)
Pict 270: Giant Eagle (WIP)

Next up are two WIPs for my Wood Elves army. I had a spare Dryad lying about and converted her with some mor branches out the back to use her as a Nymphe. I wanted to try and go with a birch theme for this one since I never had done it before. I'm not quite happy yet but luckily I'm not done yet! The Giant Eagle is also quite far along - the feathers are almost done I only want to get a bit more of a brown pattern on the white parts and then I can finish up the details such as the beak and the claws.

The Death Guard finished and I started with some Wood Elves

I finished the Plague Marines this week right in time for GW to release some new stuff for the Death Guard so that my paint queue never gets to short. Other than that I cought the Warhammer Fantasy bug again and decided to paint myself some Wood Elves.

The Death Guard
Pict 245: The Death Guard
Firstly I want to show all of the Death Guard from the Dark Imperium box - finally I painted them all and I have to say I really like the way they look as a group. I think that's one of driving forces for me to hobby - it's very satisfying to me to see the army completed.

And here are some close ups of the Plague Marines. They didn't take so long since I painted them as a group. I very much enjoy the sculpts and look forward to getting some more Plague Marines.

Wardancer
Pict 248: Wardancer

Next are the Wood Elves I painted this week. The Wood Elves are one of my first loves - they were my first WHFB army and I very much dig their fluff and their feel in the game. On top of that I think the miniatures are some of the best miniatures ever produced by any company. Especially the line for the 6th edition of the game will always have a place in my heart, but I am fond of the earlier miniatures as well.
I started this painting frenzy of Wood Elves with one of the exclusive Wardancers. I will either use him as a Champion or as a Wardancer Highborn (or a Shadowdancer when playing 8th edition). I am still not that confident in my ability to freehand and thus there is only a little bit of warpaint. Other than that I am very pleased with how the miniature came out.

Warhawk Riders (WIP)
Pict 251: Warhawk Riders (WIP)
The other Asrai are not done yet. I only finished the Warhawk Rider's bases because I didn't just want to complete the Wardancer's base. The base colours are not quite done but you can already see where the miniatures are going. We'll see what I'll have done next week but as you can see looking at the last two month's posts, there are quite a lot of unfinished miniatures currently laying on my desk...

The Lord of Contagion and the Feotid Bloat-Drone finished!

So this week I had only little time to paint (and I expect the next one to be similar...). But nevertheless I finished up the Lord of Contagion and the Bloat-Drone.

Since last I showed my Lord of Contagion, I washed the different areas and highlighted. Here I really enjoyed the folds of the cloak as well as the rips and tears - and I am happy with the warm shadows the Seraphim Sepia acomplished. It was only with this miniature that I became aware that I use almost no Agrax Earthshade with my Death Guard scheme, which I had not expected.

Foetid Bloat-Drone

And here's the finished Drone. I afixed a piece of slate to the base because otherwise it would have been a bit empty. I love the way the Hawk Turquise works on the larger brass areas and gives the miniature more colour.
Now I only have to get on with the Plaguecaster and the Plaguemarines and then the whole set is done! Only thing left to do will be to actually play the game.

The Poxwalkers done and finally some more DnD

With the Poxwalkers and more done, this week was quite good for the tally. Besides the progress with the Death Guard I finished up some Dungeons and Dragons miniatures for a game on friday.

Poxwalkers
Pict 218: Poxwalkers
First up are the remaining 18 Poxwalkers from the Dark Imperium box, halve of which are converted for mor variety. I went for bright colours with the oranges, greens and blues. Other than that the main work was done with different washes.

Hellhounds D&D

Next up are three more miniatures for DnD. The bugbear stood on my paintingtable for months only waiting for the final highlights. Thus he finished up pretty fast and I was then able to get to work on two Hellhounds. They come in a clear plastic, but I decided to just spray them white and then lay down progressivly darker tones from yellow to dark red.

Death Guard (WIP)

Lastly here are some miniatures I worked on during this last week. The Bloat-Drone is really getting there - only the highlights are missing. The Lord of Contagion and the Plaguecaster have their basecoats (almost) done and are awaiting the washes, while the Plaguemarines are only now getting the first layer of white armour.

With 21 miniatures added to the tally of painted models, I already painted more miniatures than I painted in 2015, so there's a first goal achived. I didn't finish up the Hunter Orcs in time for the tournament last weekend, but they performed well nonetheless. Right now they are rowed up on my table again...

Washes are drying on the Hunter Orcs; The Noxious Blightbringer is done

Just as you can read in the title, I got quite a bit of work done on the Hunter Orcs and I managed to finish the Blighbringer for my Death Guard.

Noxious Blightbringer
Pict 215: Noxious Blightbringer

Noxious Blightbringer
Pict 216: Noxious Blightbringer
As I suspected last week there was not to much to be done with the Noxious Blightbringer. I decided to try and weather the bronze with Hawk Turquoise for some verdigris which I quite like. Other than that I tried and mix the Blood for the Bloodgod and the Nugle's Rot on his tunic to get some really disguting effect. I do like it but I think, I will have to work on the blood effects to make them even better.

Hunter Orcs (WIP)
Pict 217: Hunter Orcs (WIP)
And here is anonther picuture of the Hunter Orcs. They are still not done, but they are getting there - the base colours are down and the washes are drying as I write. I hope to finish them until friday, but they should aready meet the requirements of the tournament.
Other than that I also continued with the Poxwalkers, but not so mutch as to warrant a picture. It's hard to paint two "hordes" but since the Walkers and the Orcs are very different it's not to bad.

Noxious Blightbringer WIP

So just a really quick update from me this week. I worked on the Hunter Orcs and started with the rest of the Poxwalkers. And then I had to get started with the Death Guard for real and got some paint on one of their characters.

Noxious Blightbringer (WIP)

And here he is! My version of a blightbringer without the incensors. I tried and get mutch work done with washes - the armour is Seraphim Sepia over Pallid Wych Flesh - and went for a Pre-Heresy insprired scheme. Tried to get some contrast with the Nurgling and the Plasmapistol. Up until now it's about an hours work - I'm curious how long it will take to highlight and weather him!

Rick and Morty Poxwalkers and progress with the Hunter Orcs

Time is quite short and thus the progress is quite slow. I have been chiping away at Hunter Orcs and primed the Death Guard. But see for yourself:

Poxwalker Rick & Morty
Pict 210: Poxwalker Rick & Morty

Poxwalker Rick & Morty
Pict 211: Poxwalker Rick & Morty

The only thing to get done are my version of Poxwalker Rick and Morty. Once they sat primed on my desk I couldn't help myself and had to get started on them. The skin was mainly achieved with washes. The rest of the models I got to use more technical paints than ever on a project before. The rust is a mix of Typhus Corrosion and a bight Blazing Orange, the puss is Nurgle's Rot and Blood for the Bloodgod makes for amazing splatter.
The bases are still drying - I will put on some dead grass and puddles of Nurgle's Rot and hope the contrast from base to mini is good. I might have to put on a wash of Nuln Oil first to darken it down.

Hunter Orcs (WIP)
Pict 212: Hunter Orc (WIP)
There was some progress with the Hunter Orcs. Right now the basecoats are almost done and after that they will all be getting a wash of Agrax Earthshade. I want to play them in the German LotR / Hobbit Championship at the end of the month and the tournament has a police to only allow painted miniatures - all unpainted ones will be removed and you have to play with the resulting disadvantage. Once the washes are down I should get away with how they look, but of course it would be nicer if they were all done in time.

And that's that - a bit of a shorter one than ususal but soon there'll be more free time again.

The Death Guard beginn their march (and a bucketload of Hunter Orcs)

This week I swapped the paintbrush for clippers and hobbyknives and built quite a bit: I started out with 24 Hunter Orcs, that were all converted, so that I now have 36 somewhat individual poses. After that I had to get started with the Death Guard from the Dark Imperium box. And after starting out with converting, I had to do a little bit of customization here as well.

Dark Imperium Death Guard
Pict 204: Death Guard

First up are my Death Guard miniatures. I really love what GW put out here! The sculpts are amazing and rather easy to put together. I'm really looking forward to paiting them - they will be next after the Hunter Orcs in the painting queue. Only problem is: I still haven't quite decided on a colourscheme. I am partial to a somewhat Pre-Heresy scheme, but I want it to be a scheme that paints fast... What I know is that they will be heavily weathered - and I can't wait to test out some new techniques.

Dark Imperium Lord of Contagion

Dark Imperium Poxwalkers
Pict 207: Poxwalkers

Dark Imperium Poxwalker Rick & Morty
Pict 208: Poxwalker Rick & Morty
And here are some of the conversions I did for the Death Guard. The Lord of Contagion changed his amazing axe to a scythe - if he was part of the Deathshroud, he should retain his powerscythe. I used a bit from an old ForgeWorld flying Hive Tyrant - it's already nicely banged up!
The miniature of the Noxious Blightbringer I found overburdened and thus I decluttered him by cutting of all the incensors. Similarly I did'nt like the magic fume of the Malignant Plaguecaster - thus I scraped that of and got him a nice hand of a Space Marine Biker.
The poxwalkers I changed up a litte to get rid of the doubled miniatures. And as many others, I had to convert a Rick and matching Morty...

Hunter Orcs
Pict 209: Hunter Orcs (WIP)

Lastly here is a picture of the Hunter Orcs I'm currently sitting on. After these 36 Orcs, I hope I will have all of the Hunter Orcs I need - I'm sure there will be some Warg riders but that's future talk. Right now it's this moutain... Right now I'm still optimistic but they will be quite the task! I have now worked two evenings on them and still I'm not done with the basic colours...
