After Action Report: A Sector Ablaze at Warhammer World

My last post is from about a month ago and quite a bit has happened since! I played a Heresy tournament in mid June and then set off on a two week vacation to England. There I played in the A Sector Ablaze Legions Imperialis narrative event at Warhammer World and the Discordia Horus Heresy narrative event in London the weekend after that. Before the journey I finished quite a few miniatures to take with me and play at these events.

With this post I want to look back at the Legions Imperialis event in Nottingham and the last few miniatures I painted to round out the army I played at the event. Next week, I will then have a look at the bigger Blood Angels.

First up, these are the miniatures I brought to the event. I played four different army lists with them depending on the mission: one 1,5k list geared towards defending, on 1,5k list geared towards attacking, and two allrounder lists – one at 2k and one at 3k. Really happy to see the collection I managed to paint here! But of course, seeing a lot of different lists at the event, I want to paint (at least!) the rest of the stuff, I have already primed. First and foremost the Scimitar Jetbikes and one Reaver Titan, but I'd love to do all the Drop Pods and maybe do a narrative scenario around a drop assault...

Legions Imperialis Blood Angels Terminators, Veteran Tacticals Marines and Tarantulas
Pict 1608: Legions Imperialis Blood Angels Terminators, Veteran Tacticals Marines and Tarantulas

These miniatures here were the ones I painted to finish out these lists: Four more Tarantulas, four stands of Terminators and two stands of Tacticals. The latter are once again built using some special weapon Marines and painted with the gold helmets to style them as Veterans.

The event pack also called for two Forward Operating bases that would have to have to be on 40mm bases instead of the usual 32mm. Painting them up was surprisingly fast – they have about as many miniatures on them as a normal stand of infantry. But there is more space between them which makes painting easier.

Pict 1612: Legions Imperialis Forward Operating Bases and Trophy from Warhammer World

During lunch on the first day you could put your markes in a display case in the gaming hall and all the players got to vote for their favourite one. I was very happy at the end of the weekend to find out that my Markers got the most votes and I received a shiny glass trophy for them! I was also voted the most sporting player – an award I was even more honoured by!

Lastly, while I was at it, I also painted these generic Objective markes to use in games of Legions Imperialis. I had them with me at Warhammer World, but they were not used in the Missions we played. Still, I'm happy to have them and use them in games from now on.

Blood Angels Legions Imperialis Armoured Company

Now, I'm making great strides with the Blood Angels! This past week, I managed to finish the armoured company for Legions Imperialis.

Legions Imperialis Blood Angels Armoured Company

Legions Imperialis Blood Angels Predators Anihilators
Pict 1596: Legions Imperialis Blood Angels Predators Anihilators

I painted the six Predators in two groups of three to be able to play them as two separate detachements. One of them has the black turrets, while the others stand out with a gold panel at the front of the tank. They should still work as single detachment as well.

Legions Imperialis Blood Angels Sicaran Omegas
Pict 1597: Legions Imperialis Blood Angels Sicaran Omegas

I really like how the Omega plasma array came out! Having the green set against red of the Blood Angels just works really nicely. Again, I painted them in two slightly different schemes by varying the black panels.

Legions Imperialis Blood Angels Sabre Strike Tanks
Pict 1598: Legions Imperialis Blood Angels Sabre Strike Tanks

The Sabres were all painted the same and are numbered one through eight as a single group. I really like their small frame compared to the other tanks! Whilst painting I found myself thinking that they are perfectly snack sized... Really fun units and I'm looking forward to using them in a game! I can see myself getting another box of them and building them with the Autocannons.

Legions Imperialis Blood Angels Storm Eagles
Pict 1599: Legions Imperialis Blood Angels Storm Eagles

Lastly for the finished miniatures, I also painted another two Storm Eagles as part of this batch of Blood Angels armour. They will, however, be part of my Aerial Assault formation, giving me the ability to bring more than the bare minimum of Tactical squads.

Also: With these twenty miniatures painted, I not only smashed my goal of painting 100 miniatures this year in total. I also surpassed last year's tally and I'm fastly approaching 2022's tally!

Pict 1600: Legions Imperialis Blood Angels Terminators, Tarantulas and Tacticals (WIP)

Legions Imperialis Forward Operating Bases and Objective Markers
Pict 1601: Legions Imperialis Forward Operating Bases and Objective Markers

Next up for Legions Imperialis will be all the miniatures I'm still missing for the upcoming event. That's a squad of four bases of Terminators, two more bases of Tactical Marines and four Tarantulas as well as the Forward Operating bases and, if I find the time, six normal objective markers made from the innards of Palisade Drop Pods.

Blood Angels Laser Destroyer Rapier (WIP)
Pict 1603: Blood Angels Laser Destroyer Rapier (WIP)

And lastly here is what I want to paint to field a narrative Blood Angels list themed around Dominion Zephon and the High Host – the latter being a formation of Destroyers. Hence, I hope to finish a squad of Assault Destroyers, some Angel's Tears and another Moritat. The Laser Destroyer Rapiers should replace the somewhat egregious full squad of Lascannon Heavy Support Marines, but they are the lowest priority right now.

Warhammer Quest Cursed City: Finishing the Baddies

Today is going to be a bit of a bigger update summing up what I got done over the summer. The focus is still on finishing up the miniatures from Warhammer Quest: Cursed City – I completed the roster of villains and am in the process of painting the heroes.

Battle in the Cursed City
Pict 1054: Battle in the Cursed City

Gorslav the Gravekeeper and Torgilius the Chamberlain
Pict 1055: Gorslav the Gravekeeper and Torgilius the Chamberlain
Gorslav the Gravekeeper and Torgilius the Chamberlain
Pict 1056: Gorslav the Gravekeeper and Torgilius the Chamberlain
First up, here is the evil monk Gorslav. In the end I went with the dark robes because they looked allright once I highlighted them. Once again a very menacing model, really fitting into the grimdark/horror setting of Cursed City. His ability to bury the heroes alive is very evocative and frightening!
Torgilius, however, is probably the one model I like the least from the whole set. He a simple Necromancer and I'm not to happy with my colour choice. He might even look better in the photo?

Vyrkos Blood-born
Pict 1057: Vyrkos Blood-born
Vyrkos Blood-born
Pict 1058: Vyrkos Blood-born
Next up are the feral Vyrkos Blood-born. Once again amazing models and I appreciate them even more after finishing them. I went with a very bright skintone similar to how they are shown on the boxart. I do like the effect and decided to use this scheme going forward with the rest of my Vampires. I might even have to go over my older Vampires to bring them into line.

Radukar the Wolf and Korsagi Nightguard
Pict 1059: Radukar the Wolf and Korsagi Nightguard
Radukar the Wolf and Korsagi Nightguard
Pict 1060: Radukar the Wolf and Korsagi Nightguard
And onto the Big Bad of the Campaign: Radukar the Wolf and his bodyguard of undead Ogres, the Korsagi Nightguard. Radukar seems a bit small in comparison, but I do like his stance with one fist forward and his vicious sword ready to strike. The Nightguard were a joy to paint and look really great in their red coats.

Additional Objective Markers and Gravestones
Pict 1061: Additional Objective Markers and Gravestones
After finishing up the baddies, I took a bit of a pause from painting and to get back into it, I did these five simple models here: two additional Gravestones and three more Objective Markers to bring a bit more variety into my games. All in all quite simple, mainly converted from leftover parts of the old Citadel Woods, the Garden of Morr and the Cursed City Zombies themselves.

Cleona Zeitengale and Octren Glimscry
Pict 1062: Cleona Zeitengale and Octren Glimscry
Cleona Zeitengale and Octren Glimscry
Pict 1063: Cleona Zeitengale and Octren Glimscry
So now, I've only got the heroes of the game left to paint and I already started with the two Loremasters: Cleona Zeitengale and Octren Glimscry. The main hurdle for the heroes seems to be deciding on a colour scheme. After I get the base colours down and a wash on the model, they go very quick. Octren was the easier one of the two since I decided to go with very bright blue robes for Cleona that took some work. I also converted her a bit by removing her headdress and the streamers on her back - now she still looks fantastical to me but no longer that over-the-top.

Lù Duan

Lù Duan
Pict 1065: Lù Duan

And lastly onto something completley different: I recently got to play in an Infinity tournament (my first one of N4) and I needed this Lù Duan for my list. I hadn't painted any Infinity models since the Sekban from over a year ago and I have to say it was a blast – a simple and quick colour scheme and a great joy to see the Agrellan Earth do pretty much all the basing on itself.

Cursed City Rats and Objectives

These past two weeks I got to some more models from the Cursed City box: I painted the swarms of Corpse Rats and all of the objectives and the additional pieces such as the cats and the gargoyles. I also started painting the Vargskyr.

Cursed City Objectives
Pict 1039: Cursed City Objectives
Corpse Rats
Pict 1040: Corpse Rats
First up, here are the Corpse Rats. Quite nice swarms and not to many colours so they painted up rather fast. Only hurdle is that they are quite fiddly and some of the rats in the middle are hard to reach. All in all, they are surely not my best paintjobs, but as always a nice base elevates a mediocre paintjob and the goal was the finish them to play the game with painted miniatures.

Cursed City Objectives
Pict 1041: Cursed City Objectives
These were quite fun to convert - just switching a few bits around to make them all unique and my own. The gravestone required a bit of shaving because of some sculpted roses and the other marker comes from one of the zombies themselves. I quite like the mechanic in the game where they use these gravestones to spawn more zombies and I plan to make some more to make the game a bit harder and have the possibility for a real zombie horde.

Diregargoyles and Gnawbone Strays
Pict 1042: Diregargoyles and Gnawbone Strays
These few miniatures seem to be pretty much only filler since there was space on the sprues. I have not yet found any use for them in the game, but who could say no to cats? I really had some great fun putting moss on the gargoyles - great miniatures!

Vargskyr (WIP)
Pict 1043: Vargskyr (WIP)
And lastly here is a WIP of my Vargskyr. A very cool model and I think it will look great once I have blended the colours!

Scenery: Arcane Ruins and a start on the Garden of Morr

These past weeks I took my resolutions to heart and painted more scenery pieces: the Arcane Ruins I had started and the statue from the Garden of Morr kit. Other than that, I also painted two more Highelves and a few more bits.

Korhil and Chracian Noble

Arcane Ruins
Pict 983: Arcane Ruins

First up, here are the Arcane Ruins I showed in my last post. It was great fun to put the different colours onto the stone but the piece really came to life with the different flocks.

Garden of Morr Statue
Pict 984: Garden of Morr Statue
Since the Arcane Ruins were so much fun and a great success, I also painted this Statue from the Garden of Morr / Sigmarite Mausoleum kit. I added a base and some more flagstones made from plastic card to blend it in some more with the other terrain pieces. I also scraped of the sculpted on foliage and flowers. They are neat details but they don't fit the other flocks I put on.
Arcanite Markers
Pict 985: Arcanite Markers
Another small project were these Crystalfield bases made by Tabletop Art. I had them in mind to use as objective markers for ArcWorlde when I read the rulebook. Oftentimes in this narrative system you will find yourself fighting over scraps of Arcanite, a magical crystal and these bases fit the bill perfectly.
Korhil and Chracian Noble
Pict 986: Korhil and Chracian Noble
Korhil and Chracian Noble
Pict 987: Korhil and Chracian Noble
Korhil and Chracian Noble
Pict 988: Korhil and Chracian Noble
And here are two more High Elves. Korhil Lionmane, Captain of the White Lions and a fitting Noble from Chrace armed with and axe, a shield and a lion pelt. These white lion pelts troubled me - at first I tried to shade them with Seraphim Sepia but that made them look to dirty even when highlighted. Now they simply use a mix of Steel Legion Drab and Screaming Skull without any washes. And one more thing might be the Noble's shield - I want to put on some heraldry or an elven rune but for now I was not able to decide on any device.
Unithorn and Garden of Morr (WIP)
Pict 989: Unithorn and Garden of Morr (WIP)
With the Arcane Ruins and the Statue, I almost made good on one of my New Years resolutions. I prepared the first of the Garden of Morr mausoleums, once again adding a base. And to the left here stands another ArcWorlde miniature: the Unithorn, a bigger summoned monster of the Wild Elves line.

The Owlbear Family, tiny Azra'il and more

This week I made headway with two more miniatures for my Haqqislam, the Objective Markers from last week and more Rohirrim for the Middle-earth SBG and even more. First up however is a new miniature for D&D.

Owlbear Family

Pict 631: Owlbear (GF9)

Right now I am also in the process of touching up older miniatures and giving them a protective coat. This week I got around to the Owlbears from two years ago. Now since I already had the fitting colours all mixed up, I got to painting another fierce Owlbear mommy to the little family. This particular miniature was part of GaleForceNine's Monster Paint Set and is comparativly large in comparison with the ones made by Darksword. Of course the details are way better with the metal miniatures but I really like the pose of this newer one.

Azra'il
Pict 632: Azra'il
Azra'il
Pict 633: Azra'il

These two figures do not really have a use right now - they are the outdated Azra'il models from about 2008. I really liked the look of them when I first got into the game and bought them now as legacy pieces when I had the chance. I might use them as proxies of some kind but sometimes it's great to simply paint some nice miniatures even if you don't have a use for them.

Sauron Objective Markes
Pict 634: Sauron Objective Markes
The Three Hunters Objective Markers
Pict 635: The Three Hunters Objective Markers

And here are the objective markers that I started last week. I pretty much went ahead with my plan on the evil markers and I really like the result. I also wanted to use wetblending on the markers with the leafs of Lorien but the green didn't really lend itself to it. I did put in a lighter green but after putting in the other details and the wash over it not much remains to be seen of it. Still, they will serve their purpose.

Riders of Rohan (WIP)
Pict 636: Riders of Rohan (WIP)

Lastly here is a WIP of seven more Riders of Rohan that I need to round out my army for the tournament at the end of the month. For now the base colours are down (sloppily) and I hope to finish them quickly with only the washes and the highlights to go.
